The Dirty Dozen
12 Communication Barriers
Words can have many meanings depending upon the topic of conversation, the context the word is used in and the relationship between the two people among many other factors.
The purpose of communication is to pass information from one person to another, it is to connect with one another, we are social tribal animals and connection is a powerful force. We want to share how we see the world with another person and to see the world from their point of view in order to broaden our understanding and to bond with one another. We use communication to understand some ‘thing’ in a deeper way and to share our understanding with others.
Communicating with one another creates a common experience, which in turn creates a culture. In today’s episode, we are going to take a look at some common communication barriers, I think of them as Bully Behaviors because, like bullies, their behavior is that to intimidate, pressure and even control another. But unlike bullies, they are often mindless patterns that we fall into because of what is modeled by the boss, by a peer or by our family of origin. These dirty dozen that we will take a look at today may resonate with you right away, you might recognize an interaction or conversation that you have had that didn’t feel good, but you might not have known what exactly it was or why it felt bad or like a disconnect of some sort.
